My Story

Meet Khira — Fighter, Teacher, Human
Hi, I’m Khira—a 35-year-old Black woman, educator, storyteller, and breast cancer warrior.
In March 2025, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and nothing has been the same since. I found the lump myself—on what was supposed to be the start of a relaxing spring break. Instead of rest, I was catapulted into a whirlwind of scans, biopsies, hard choices, and harder truths.
“How do I save myself... and still stay human?”
That question echoed louder than the rest. And it’s exactly how the Save the Human Project was born.
This is more than a blog. It’s a movement—a living journal of what it means to fight for your life without losing your joy, your purpose, or your sense of humor. Here, I write about everything from being diagnosed while teaching full-time, to fertility preservation, to what not to say to someone with cancer.
“I cry here. I laugh here. I cuss a little. I tell the truth.”
But this isn’t just about me. It’s about us—about all the people navigating this messy, miraculous life who just need to know they’re not alone. It’s for the warriors, the caregivers, the confused, the exhausted, the hopeful, and the human.
When I’m not being poked, scanned, or waiting on hold with insurance, I’m dreaming, designing, and directing. I’ve spent my career as a passionate educator and theatre artist, and now I’m learning to tell my story in a whole new way—one that’s still full of love, laughter, and purpose.
“This space is for anyone who’s ever wondered how to hold grief and gratitude in the same hand.”
Welcome to the fight.
Welcome to the healing.
Welcome to the project.
With heart,
Khira
